Some people are born with the world on a silver platter for them. Tori Spelling is one of those people, although being born into a life of privilege did not mean that the rest of her life would be a cake walk. Tori Spelling might have had it made at one point, but she made choices in her life that made everything harder for her.
She came into stardom at a young age, as a result of having a father who was beyond ultra-connected in Hollywood. How did Tori Spelling handle the fame that she was handed, though? Not well… From the outside looking in, everything in her life seemed to go downhill. Here’s everything you wanted to know about this starlet!
Tori Spelling’s Rocky Ride
Though you could argue that many of the struggles Tori Spelling has run into are from her own doing, it is hard to look past the tragedy of her situation. Stars deserve to have comfortable, drama-free lives too, no? This gal has found herself at the center of several struggles.
It’s always a surprise to learn how she’s handled a difficult situation. She hasn’t always made the best decisions. As she continues to fall further into financial ruin, she’s continuing to grow her family. She’s stayed in a relationship that seems to be failing in the public eye – but that’s her prerogative!
Her First Wedding Was Super Expensive
By super expensive, I mean the festivities cost roughly a million bucks! That must have been one fancy party, right? You might even think that this wedding would last forever, but that’s not the case in the slightest. Don’t you think that a super expensive wedding is pretty good incentive to make the marriage last?
Well, think again! Though Tori Spelling and her first husband Charlie Shanian had been together for many years prior to getting married, they only lasted about 14 months together in holy matrimony. The pair met on the set of Maybe Baby, It’s You and it’s safe to say… it probably wasn’t the right fit!
Both Tori and Her Current Husband Ended Marriages for Each Other
Tori Spelling was already married when she met her current husband, Dean McDermott. In fact, he was married too… and yes, they both left their spouses for the other person. That sounds like a truly solid foundation for a marriage that is built to last, right? Well, they’ve had their fair share of drama…
Both decided it would be best to pursue this relationship instead of working on their respective marriages. These two have seemed to have a tough go at things, but they have seemingly made it work throughout the years. They do have five kids together, after all! Glad it’s worked out so far!
They Got Hot and Heavy, Quickly
Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling were engaged after just four months together (and let’s not forget, while they were both married to other people), and that’s not even the craziest part. Spelling admitted that it didn’t take long for them to begin their affair. Can you guess how long it took them to get started?
Despite both parties being already married to other people, that didn’t stop them from kicking off their love affair as soon as they met. That’s right, these two lovebirds started their steamy love affair the same day they met! These two didn’t want to wait a second to get started on their lives together, despite taking vows of allegiance to other people.
She’s Been Sued by American Express Multiple Times
Being wealthy is great and all, but you’re not truly wealthy if you owe a ton of money! Just ask Spelling, the queen of going from riches to rags and back again. She’s apparently dug quite the financial hole for herself – with or without her husband.
She’s struggled financially throughout the years. Maybe it’s irresponsibility; maybe there’s a problem we just aren’t seeing from the outside looking in. Anyway, it seems that American Express saw her problems and decided it was time to take a stand against her.
That’s Quite a Chunk of Change!
American Express sued Tori Spelling for failure to make payments that she owed, not once but twice! The initial lawsuit served by American Express was set for $38,000 in addition to any necessary court fees. The second lawsuit against her came within just a couple of months…
Just two months later, American Express sued her yet again for another massive amount. They sued Spelling for $87,595.55 this time around, making the grand total well over 100 grand. According to the credit card company’s reports, no payments toward the total have yet been made!
She Got Implants, Then Regretted It
Spelling doesn’t seem to show much remorse for some of her poorer choices throughout the years, but there was something that she came to terms with. She admitted to regretting her choice to get breast implants. She didn’t realize how it would affect her body later in life.
She had no clue that getting breast implants would affect her milk production when she started to have kids. This clearly caused complications that she was unprepared to deal with – but at least she admitted to making a choice she now regrets!
She Blamed Paparazzi for Her Car Crash
In 2011, Tori Spelling got into a bad car accident. Things could have been way worse, but the accident in itself was pretty terrifying. To make matters worse, she was pregnant with her third child at the time. Luckily, both she and her unborn child were OK!
That wasn’t even the most dramatic part of it all, though. The site of her car crash? The school her kids attended! After the incident, Spelling claimed she was being stalked by paparazzi. They wouldn’t stop following her and as she tried to get away from them, she crashed her car in the process. Ouch!
The Hibachi Incident
Back in 2015, Spelling went out with her family to a nice dinner to celebrate the Easter holiday. They went to a Benihana hibachi/teppanyaki restaurant and at some point during their meal, she tripped and fell onto the grill at their table. She suffered as a result of the fall…
As a result of the accident, Spelling suffered from burns up and down her arm. That sounds really painful, but that might not have even been the most painful aspect of it all. As a result, she turned around and sued the restaurant for $25,000 in damages incurred through the unfortunate accident.
The Start of Her Story
At this point in the article, you’re probably wondering “why haven’t I read much about her past and her famous family?” That’s a totally valid question but be patient – this girl has had an active life filled with privilege and drama. So many of her struggles can be traced back to her family life.
Growing up as the daughter of one of the most prominent producers in Hollywood, Aaron Spelling, may have come with perks, but it also came with a big price tag. She grew up in one of the biggest homes in Los Angeles, a mansion her father built on Bing Crosby’s old estate.
Life on “The Manor”
Spelling grew up in the biggest mansion in Los Angeles. Her father built his castle on the property that once belonged to Bing Crosby, erecting a massive 123-room, 56,000 square foot mansion that he would officially refer to as “The Manor” for the rest of his days.
Spelling grew up in the lap of luxury. Coming from a background in which everything was handed to her, she would later learn that not everything in life would turn out that way. She could have never guessed that someday she’d fall into financial ruin and make Hollywood headlines for her downfall.
Life Served on a Silver Spoon
It’s one thing to have a successful parent who has given you the world, but it’s something totally different for a parent to hand you a role to help you break into the world of entertainment. Well, Spelling had both as her reality. What a lucky set up she had!
Her role as Donna Martin on Beverly Hills, 90210 was given to her because of her father. Fortunately, she wasn’t blind to her immense privilege and was the first to admit that her big break came much easier than it did for people without ties to the business – let alone, someone whose father was calling the shots for the show!
How Did She Land the Gig?
“I heard about the show from my agent. She said, ‘Your dad is doing it.’ I was like, ‘I haven’t heard anything about it.’ I popped into his briefcase when he got home, and I was like, cool,” she divulged in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“I really wanted to play Andrea. I went in under a different name, then I got the part of Donna — which I’m sure had something to do with my dad.” Wow… yeah Tori, maybe that was what landed you the role! Sure does help to have daddy on your side.
The Success Was Ultimately Her Own
Sure, daddy Aaron Spelling helped her land the role, but the show itself was a major success. Spelling divulged that during this time, she was able to get by on her own with the successes she had from the show. She was able to become rich and famous on her own terms.
Though this lasted for a while, it didn’t last long enough. When the show wrapped in 2000, her life of lavish luxury and never having to think twice about financial matters would finally catch up with her. Unfortunately, she wasn’t super surprised her financial problems that would follow her into her adult life.
“It’s No Surprise Why I Have Money Problems”
In her 2013 book “Spelling It Like It Is” she divulged the truth about the root of her financial problems. “It’s no mystery why I have money problems. I grew up rich beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. I never knew anything else. Even when I try to embrace a simpler lifestyle, I can’t seem to let go of my expensive tastes,” she wrote.
She continued, “Even when my tastes aren’t fancy, they’re still costly. I moved houses to simplify my life but lost almost a million dollars along the way.” She wasn’t done there, though. “That means, in my mind, [that] I was what everyone thought I was, taking money from my dad,” she told ABC News in 2008.
She Would Rather Not Depend on Her Father
“Everyone thought I was the rich little girl that [my dad] paid for everything,” she told ABC News in 2008. “And I refused to be that. [I would] rather be bankrupt.” Well, little did she know that would be her reality in the years ahead.
In her efforts to remain financially independent, she found herself playing in several bit roles to pay the bills. This chick found bit roles in Scary Movie 2, as well as a ton of other roles in made-for-TV movies like A Carol Christmas, Family Plan, and Hush.
Her Father’s Will Proved Problematic
Aaron Spelling was reportedly worth around $500 million. That’s a pretty awesome sum of money, isn’t it? Surely Tori and her brother, Randy, would be set for life as a result. Well, this is far from the case, because these kids each received less than a million bucks after taxes.
When their father passed away, the public was shocked to hear that the two Spelling children received a “measly” $800,000 after taxes. Where did the rest of that money go? It went to his widow, Randy and Tori’s mother, Candy. This was not what Tori expected.
Tori Was Shocked
Though it was a rather shocking number to her, Spelling admitted to speaking with her father before his death about how much she would find herself with. “It was a hard conversation to have with him. I didn’t want him to think that I was asking him for the money, or even talking about something so morbid as when he would pass,” she’d said.
“But I thought it was a conversation I needed to have… for myself and for my brother,” she admitted in her 2008 interview with ABC News. “We had lunch and he said, ‘You’re gonna be OK. I made sure. You’re getting just under a million.’”
Ultimately, She Felt Let Down
“I think part of me, in the back of my head, maybe hoped it would be different. But I hated myself for hoping it would be different, because I didn’t want to take advantage, I didn’t want to be that girl who needed or wanted my dad’s money.”
She lived on without a huge inheritance, though the way she spent what she got was maybe a bit questionable. She did admit to overspending over the years, though she rarely opened up about the lack of financial help she gets from her mother. Her mom wasn’t quite proud of having to help her daughter out…
She Overindulged, but Paid the Price
As her debt continued to rise, her problems persisted, and she was in clear need of help. When her American Express lawsuit came to light, her mother spoke out about how she was helping – but specified that she wasn’t helping with the debts that came from overindulgence.
“I’ve been helping her out. I’m paying all her bills now,” her mother Candy told TMZ in 2016. “Except I’m not paying extras like that. No, I’m not paying any back payments. Just for the house and the kids’ school and the food, that’s all.”
Her Financial Troubles Followed Her in Many Ways
Most of her career seemed to be centered around made-for-TV movies, so she found herself pivoting toward reality television. While that seemed to keep her relevant in television for a decent amount of time, she still continued to have financial problems.
Back in 2014, it was revealed by E! News that the state of California served Spelling and her husband McDermott with a tax lien. This amounted to $259,108 in unpaid state taxes! They’d sold their house at a loss back in 2011, and to add an extra topping to this questionable sundae? Her husband just barely avoided jailtime for failing to pay child support to his ex-wife!
She Spent Her Inheritance on a Bed & Breakfast
Though it is totally up to her how to spend her inheritance, she certainly chose a rather… questionable point of purchase. Spelling and her husband spent the money on a bed & breakfast (B&B), which they named Chateau La Rue. Unfortunately, this didn’t seem to work out in their favor…
They had told everyone about their new “business venture,” but it turns out that it wasn’t what it seemed to be. They technically did not buy the business, rather signed a lease for a year, but the lease finished by the end of the second season of their reality show, Tori and Dean: Inn Love.
The B&B Is Under New Management
As it turned out, the show’s contract with the B&B ended and it seemed unlikely that the show would be up for a third season. After Oxygen was obtained by NBC, it seemed unclear whether the show was going to return. Naturally, this made it easier for the old owners to take over again.
The former owners of the inn gave it the name it previously had – Oak Creek Manor. “The inn will maintain most of Tori and Dean’s new room colors but will return a couple of rooms to their original splendor which matches the architecture: Colonial,” representatives said.
How Much Is Tori Spelling Worth?
This actress has a net worth that doesn’t quite match the life she grew up with, nor does it likely reflect what she thought she would have at this point in her life. Today, Tori Spelling’s net worth is roughly $500,000 which is exponentially less than that of her family.
Some other sources will say that she has that amount plus an extra million, but it’s questionable because she hasn’t been supporting herself financially. She’s been depending on her mother for some necessary survival payments – it’s really hard to say. Either way, she doesn’t have the wealth you might think she has!
Her Relationship With Her Husband Started Out Strangely
Tori Spelling and her husband, Dean McDermott, met on the set of a made-for-TV movie while they were both in relationships with different people. Both broke off their marriages and while it’s great that they’re still together, you can see the issues that came to light from their questionable beginnings.
In her book, Spelling described how she’d broken her marriage off to be with McDermott and let’s just say it wasn’t a good conversation. “I told him that I’d never been in love with him. I loved him and he’d been a friend to me, but I married him because he was a great guy, a guy who took care of me. Charlie didn’t want to hear it.” That’s never all, is it?
Their Relationship Started With Cheating
She continued, “He kept saying, ‘Where’s all this coming from? We have a perfect relationship.’ Then he turned to me. ‘Did you cheat on me?’ I said yes. He said, ‘It was with Dean, wasn’t it?’ I said yes. He said, ‘I should have known.’” That doesn’t seem like the strongest way to start a new marriage!
After just two months, the two exchanged vows in Fiji in a private ceremony. Just two months later, her father Aaron Spelling passed away from a stroke. Maybe his stroke had something to do with frustrations from his daughter’s breakup and quick exchanging of new vows!
It Didn’t Take Long for Him to Cheat on Her, Too!
So much happened within the first year of their holy union. Her father died and she had her first of five children all in the same period. Plus, her relationship with her mother Candy exploded in front of her eyes. Things were not looking good for her!
Seriously, it seemed like everything between them was maybe even doomed from the start. There were rumors of him cheating pretty persistently throughout their marriage and, unfortunately, it seems like things have finally started to catch up to them. Will they really last forever?
Her Mother Blamed Her for Her Father’s Death
Yeah, you read that right. Her mother Candy felt it was necessary to point fingers at her own daughter for her late husband’s untimely death. He was ill, and Candy ultimately blamed Tori’s estrangement from her father and lack of communication for his end of days. She made sure to clarify her comments but maintained that Tori’s estrangement from her dad sent him downhill.
“I didn’t intend to create headlines. I was asked a question about my daughter not speaking with my family, and I answered truthfully. My husband was very ill, and he had stopped eating and taking liquids. He called Tori on a daily basis and never stopped asking if Tori had returned his call. We had to say no every day.”
Is Tori Spelling Still Married?
So, this is a rather complicated question, it seems! Though there hasn’t been any official confirmation of a breakup, all signs seem to be pointing that way. Though Spelling and McDermott have been married for years, they’ve had a ton of problems that were out in the public eye for everyone to see.
Fuel has been added to the “did they break up?” fire, especially after both of them were seen without their wedding rings in public. They’ve been reportedly sleeping in different bedrooms, as well as deleting things on social media here and there. Sounds juicy!
She Starred in Reality TV
Wow, where to begin with this one?! In the last few years, she’s starred in a ton of different reality shows. But she’s only been the main star of a few of them though she has made appearances and has hosted a slew of other programs.
She went on to do some pretty interesting roles, or so you could say. She starred in True Tori, Celebrity Show-Off, Tori & Dean: Inn Love, Craft Wars, and so many others. This girl has been truly active in the reality television sphere! Seems like she’s unstoppable…
Inside True Tori
So much of the explicit content we saw from Spelling and her husband came from this series which only lasted two seasons. They moved on to other shows like Tori and Dean: Inn Love. The show started out looking at something intimate.
The show started out in a pretty tough situation. Seriously, she starts out the series in Episode One with her private conversation with her husband about his cheating rumors. These two are just bad news for each other, and True Tori allowed the rest of the world to see it from the get-go.
She’s the Host of Craft Wars
I guess she really wants to stay relevant, which explains why she would go on to host something like this. She works as the host of Craft Wars on TLC, guiding the many craft enthusiasts of America on a journey of many crafting challenges.
Each episode consists of three contestants going neck and neck at two different crafting challenges. The things that people came up with were amazing! Tori Spelling must not have known what to do with herself when seeing such interesting and random projects.
Spelling is just one of the many celebrities who shows up in this nine-episode reality show. It came out in the middle of the pandemic and was entirely remote. Mayim Bialik hosted the show and it seemed like a really good use of pandemic time, you know?
Diplo, Ja Rule, Action Bronson, Gabi Butler, Dwight Howard, Travis Kelce, NeNe Leakes, Jason Mraz, Kevin Smith, Tori Spelling, Bella Thorne, Rumer Willis, Scout Willis, and Tallulah Willis all appeared. Luckily for her, she even won the show! That’s pretty impressive, at least I’d say!
How Old Is Tori Spelling?
Tori Spelling was born on May 16th, 1973. That makes her 48 years old today. She’s just like the many women who aren’t aging so gracefully – she looks OK, but she’s definitely not the same beautiful, young girl from back in the day. Not everyone looks timeless!
She’s filled her years with many experiences that are very entertaining. She’s changed a supporting role to a leading role, appeared in other projects (including a Beverly Hills 90210 podcast), she’s written books, and ultimately wowed everyone with her persistence!
She Isn’t Focused on Acting
Even with her making headlines across the board for questionable reasons, she’s still got some pretty big aspirations. In an interview with Us Magazine, Spelling divulged details about her goals and how she hoped to become like an idol she looks up to…
She said that she’d love to be Martha Stewart – or at least the next big thing. Spelling cited her passion for crafting, party planning, and cooking. She even mentioned that she would be happy to have a farm someday, because she loves gardening and animals. Who wouldn’t want a farm in that case?
She Sold Off 90210 Memorabilia
In June 2015, TMZ reported on Spelling and McDermott’s yard sale. Not only did the couple sell off memorabilia from the show, but they even sold a 90210 co-star’s wedding invitation to a fan! That’s a really “classy” move…
They sold off Jason Priestley’s wedding invitation! “I happened to be at home watching the local news one night, something I rarely got to do. [Spelling’s] yard sale made the broadcast. I saw my very own wedding invitation on the screen. Apparently, it had gone for five bucks, including a personal autograph by [Spelling]. She sold my wedding invitation to a stranger,” Priestley said.
Tori’s an Ordained Minister
Back in 2007, Tori Spelling became an ordained minister by the Universal Life Church Ministers! She’s even featured on their website as one of their “Hollywood’s Hall of Famous ULC Ministers,” so you can guess that they’re probably pretty excited to have her on board!
“I am now officially ordained. Yep, that’s right… Reverend Tori Spelling! I did it last week online and my official certificate is in the mail,” she shared on the social media platform MySpace. She quickly officiated the marriage of two men named Tony and Dex, saying “This by far was my scariest moment simply because they had bestowed such an honor upon me, and I didn’t want to let them down.”
Both Spelling and McDermott Have Had Near Death Experiences
Sometimes things happen naturally that are pretty freaking terrifying, and sometimes accidents claim lives too soon. Unfortunately, both of these things happened to Spelling and McDermott. Everything they dealt with was unfortunate and naturally pretty terrifying, for anyone. Luckily things didn’t get as bad as they could have.
In her interview with Us Weekly back in 2012, while she was pregnant with her fourth child, her son named Finn, she learned that she had been diagnosed with placenta previa. This condition can sometimes become fatal, resulting in hemorrhaging, child loss, and even the mother’s death.
Luckily, That’s Not What Happened
Spelling admitted that throughout her pregnancy, she was concerned and felt that she was “walking on eggshells.” The condition is reportedly “caused by” conception of another child just a month after giving birth. She told the magazine, “I just remember thinking, I can’t leave three children behind.”
Luckily, she ended up being fine, but her husband also had a near-death experience just two years before her own. McDermott was in a major motorcycle accident that left him with a collapsed and punctured lung. He was in intensive care, and to make matters worse, it was his second motorcycle accident that year!
