Marriages of the Rich and Famous: Nuptials That Didn’t Even Last a Year

Celebrities aren’t like us “normal folk,” where divorces are kept as private, internal struggles. They have to deal with the media, which really only adds insult to injury. A failed Hollywood marriage doesn’t stay behind closed doors. No, ma’am. In a celebrity divorce, all the dirty laundry gets aired out.

This is a list of the shortest celebrity marriages, ordered from the longest to shortest. And believe it or not, some lasted less than a family holiday vacation in the Caribbean. Wait ‘till you see how many celebs appear on this list more than once!

Hank Azaria and Helen Hunt: 11 Months

Although they dated for six years before deciding to make it official on July 17, 1999, Helen Hunt and Hank Azaria just couldn’t keep it together as a married couple. They split up after 11 months of marriage.

Photo by Ron Galella/Ron Galella Collection/Getty Images

Their divorce was mostly a result of both of them being heavily involved in their careers during their marriage. And it looks like making it big in the business was just more important than keeping up with the Joneses.

Ojani Noa and Jennifer Lopez: 313 Days

Lopez and Noa tied the knot on February 22, 1997, but less than a year later, they broke it off. Their divorce caused more than just signing papers to end the marriage. They got themselves into several legal issues.

One of those legal issues involved Noa threatening to write a book that would expose her and sharing one of their “intimate” tapes. That’s right; there are more than just a few tapes lying around in wait in Hollywood.

Fred Armisen and Elisabeth Moss: 312 Days

Long before her success in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Moss was married to “Saturday Night Live” alumni Fred Armisen. They got married on October 25, 2009, only to break up eight months later. Moss filed for divorce in early September 2010. In a 2014 interview, Moss explained what went wrong in the marriage.

Looking back, I feel like I was really young, and at the time I didn’t think that I was that young,” she stated. She also said how it was extremely traumatic and horrible. But despite the bad experience, she added that “it turned out for the best.”

Jim Carrey and Lauren Holly: 309 Days

Any “Dumb and Dumber” fan will appreciate this marriage, regardless of how short it lasted. The co-stars Carrey and Holly wed on September 23, 1996. Holly then filed for divorce 10 months later, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

Source: YouTube

In an interview, Holly explained that they dated in secret for years before getting married. Paparazzi got more invasive, climbing their fence and going through their garbage. She said they tried hard to keep the press out of their personal lives.

Rick Salomon and Shannen Doherty: 9 Months

‘90210’ star Shannen Doherty and Rick Salomon got married back in February 2002, only to split up in November 2002. They were married for 9 months in total. And yes, if the name Rick Salomon rings a bell, you’re right.

This is the Rick Salomon of the Paris Hilton “intimate” tape fame, who will appear further down on the list in his marriage to Pamela Anderson. But you’ll have to wait to see how long that short marriage lasted.

Cris Judd and Jennifer Lopez: 218 Days

Lopez is making another appearance on this list. She met Cris Judd in 2001 when he worked as a back-up dancer in her “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” video. They got engaged and married within the same year, but the marriage came to an end 218 days later.

Judd didn’t blame fame for their failed marriage, but it wasn’t his favorite part of their time together, either. Judd said of their relationship with Us Weekly in 2014: “You know it’s very tough. Your privacy is breached. You’re no longer a normal person. [Our wedding] was a circus. I think several people got arrested trying to climb up a mountain … trying to sneak in.”

Tom D’agostino and LuAnn: 216 Days

LuAnn D’agostino from “The Real Housewives of New York City” divorced her husband of seven months, Tom D’agostino. She announced it after a report from Page Six, which said there was trouble in the marriage, and that LuAnn slapped him at an upscale NYC restaurant.

According to LuAnn, it was more of a “tap” than a “slap.” She also said their dramatic marriage was a result of their “very passionate love affair.” Many of her reality TV castmates told her that Tom was cheating on her with various women. But she married him anyway on New Year’s Eve 2016.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth: 7 Months

Miley Cyrus, 26, and Liam Hemsworth, 29, had just revealed that they decided to go their separate ways after only seven months of marriage, albeit they were on-and-off dating for 10 years. “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a representative for Cyrus told PEOPLE, who got married in December 2018.

Rumors of a split between the two began very recently, after the “Mother’s Daughter” singer posted an Instagram photo of herself where she wasn’t wearing her wedding ring.

Conrad Hilton and Elizabeth Taylor: 205 Days

Taylor was 18 when she married the hotel heir. This was the first of her eventual 8 marriages. This one ended before she turned 19. In her 1965 memoir, Taylor wrote that their marriage was over by the time they returned from their two-week honeymoon.

The honeymoon in Europe lasted two weeks,” she wrote in her memoir book. “I should say the marriage lasted for two weeks. Then came, Yours sincerely, disillusionment rude and brutal.

Colton Haynes & Jeff Leatham: 6 Months

Actor and model Colton Hayes married Jeff Leatham in October 2017. But soon after their wedding day, they began having marital problems and split six months later. It was a hard time for Haynes. In March 2018, his mother died after suffering advanced liver and kidney failure.

Then, in May 2018, he split up with Leatham, a celebrity florist and writer. These two events, in addition to adjusting to a new life out of the closet, wreaked havoc in the actor’s life. “I came out and, in a way, my downward spiral started,” he told Attitude Magazine.

Tom Green and Drew Barrymore: 163 days

Drew and Tom eloped in 2001, which usually isn’t an act that screams longevity. As it turned out, Green filed for divorce from Barrymore just five months later. In 2014, he revealed to Oprah in an interview that they’re no longer in communication.

Source: Featureflash Photo Agency / Shutterstock.com

I haven’t talked to her in many, many years,” Green said. “I’m glad she’s doing great. I’m really happy that she’s doing good.” And “doing good” is right. The actress has a net worth of $25 million.

Speaking of net worth, see our list of celeb net worth here!

Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush: 163 Days

These “One Tree Hill” co-stars walked down the aisle in April 2005 in Malibu. They officially separated five months later when Bush filed for an annulment. But the annulment was denied, and so the couple had to wait until December 2006 until the divorce was finalized.

When she was on “Watch What Happens Live” in 2014, she said, “We were two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place,” Bush stated. “To all the other costars who’ve worked it out, more power to you.”

Shannen Doherty and Ashley Hamilton: 5 Months

Here’s another celebrity that appears more than once on this list. In this case, the bride and groom were only 22 and 19 years old (respectively) when they got married in Shannen’s backyard in a BYOB party on September 24, 1993.

Shannen walked down the aisle barefoot, wearing a silk robe. She was without her father as no parents were invited to the ceremony. * Eye roll. Kids * Then by the following March, Hamilton moved out of their Los Angeles home, and on April 8, Shannen filed for divorce.

Kenny Chesney Renee Zellweger: 128 days

Zellweger and Chesney’s public divorce announcement led to a lot of speculation about the country singer’s sexual orientation. On September 15, 2005, Zellweger cited “fraud” as the reason for their separation.

Source: YouTube

The ordeal was long and dragged out in many gossip magazines and websites, but she’s finally forgotten about it. During an interview with The Advocate, she said, “It’s a pretty big thing to forget, isn’t it? That made me sad. It made me sad that somehow, people were using that as a way to be cruel and calling someone gay as a pejorative, which has fateful consequences. Of course, there’s the bigger-picture problem of why anyone had to make up a story at all.”

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Esposito: 122 days

This wasn’t as famous as the other marriages, but Cooper and “Blue Bloods” star Espositio got hitched, too. They wed in December 2006 and filed for divorce in May the next year. According to Cooper, it was a mutual decision.

It was just something that happened,” Cooper told Howard Stern on his show. “The good thing is, we both realized it … Sometimes you just realize it.” Sounds like a perfect divorce if you ask me! Something that seldom happens.

Colin Farrell and Amelia Warner: 121 days

The actors married in Tahiti on July 17, 2001, and Farrell made it even more official when he chose to get a tattoo of her name around his ring finger. But the couple broke up just four months later. They later insinuated that the marriage wasn’t even legally binding in the first place.

It wasn’t legally binding, it was just something we did for us,” Warner said in an interview. At the time, Warner (the daughter of two actors Annette Ekblom and Alun Lewis) was best known for playing a role in BBC’s ‘Lorna Doone’ in 2000.

Charlie Sheen and Donna Peele: 4 Months

Charlie Sheen married to model Donna Peele on September 3, 1995. But when Sheen was revealed to be a client of the escort Heidi Fleiss, Peele filed a divorce. Sheen went on to marry Denise Richards in 2002, which ended and so he later married Brooke Mueller in 2008.

Peele met Sheen during a commercial shoot. He was just a budding actor at that time. The commercial was for a cigarette brand. The attraction was clearly so strong that the couple started dating soon after.

James DeBarge and Janet Jackson: 4 Months

Back when Janet Jackson was only 18 years old, she shocked her fans and her family when she eloped with musician James DeBarge on September 7, 1984. And whaddayaknow – just a few months later, they had the marriage annulled.

Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

Janet and James first became friends when she was just 13 years old. Though it was against her father Joe’s wishes, the couple still secretly got married in a private ceremony. Rumors were swirling around that they had a secret child.

Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley: 107 Days

Presley is the only child of singer Elvis Presley, and she said “I do” to the Oscar-winning actor on the 25th anniversary of her father’s death in 2002. The couple split three months later, and they didn’t comment on the reason.

Cage said in a public statement: “I did not talk about the marriage, and I am not going to talk about the divorce.”

Todd Meister and Nicky Hilton: 85 days

Before headlines were made about an expensive love-triangle lawsuit with his assistant, Meister was famous for marrying hotel heiress Nicky Hilton in a quick Las Vegas wedding in 2004. One night around 2:30 a.m., the two made things official. Paris Hilton was the bridesmaid, and the best man was Jeff Beacher.

It was a beautiful, small wedding with amazing energy,” Beacher told People days after they wed. He said that the two of them were very much in love. Despite all that, the couple decided to get their marriage annulled, before even getting to the three-month mark.

Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian: 72 days

This marriage (and its divorce) was one of the most talked-about celebrity relationships ever. So you probably already know about it. But for those who don’t, here’s a refresher. Kim Kardashian West said yes when NBA superstar Kris Humphries proposed in May 2011. They got married in August, and by Halloween, they filed for divorce.

People naturally thought their 72-day marriage was a publicity stunt, but both parties deny it. “First and foremost, I married for love,” Kim said in a blog post. “I can’t believe I even have to defend this. I would not have spent so much time on something just for a TV show.”

Rick Salomon and Pamela Anderson: 60 days

I told you that we’d get to the next Rick Salamon marriage. And we also land at another Pamela Anderson marriage as well. And this one is even shorter than both of their previous marriages. Pam married Rick on October 2007 in Las Vegas, and she filed to have it all dissolved later that year.

Photo by David M. Benett/Getty Images

They separated more than once, and the first time wasn’t as bad as the second. Harsh words and accusations were thrown around in court. But they later publicly stated that “Public divorces can be harsh and cruel — we apologize to our families and friends for any hurt and embarrassment we have caused — we have come to an amicable agreement and are moving on.”

Rick Rockwell and Darva Conger: 2 Months

Darva Conger and Rick Rockwell met and even got married during a live broadcast of “Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?” It comes as no surprise that the marriage was a less-than-ideal fit.

The mismatch was emphasized when it came to light that he turned out to have a shady past and a less than impressive bank account. While Darva criticized the man for having a lack of morals, she later appeared nude in Playboy.

Chris Kattan and Sunshine Tutt: 59 days

The former “SNL” cast member Chris Kattan and model Sunshine Tutt married in June 2008 in Yosemite Valley, California. But they split eight weeks later in August of the same year. Kattan was 37 and Tutt 31.

The two started dating in 2005, after meeting at a birthday party. He actually popped the question at Tutt’s grandmother’s house in Gainesville, Texas, on Christmas Eve 2006. Apparently, he gift-wrapped the ring in the present.

Chad Johnson and Evelyn Lozada: 41 days

NFL star Chad Johnson (formerly Ochocinco) and Evelyn Lozada (who you may know from “Basketball Wives”) walked down the aisle in St. Martin in July 2012. Their marriage blew up on August 11, when Evelyn found a receipt for condoms in their car.

After a fight, Johnson was arrested on domestic violence charges when police saw a bloody gash on her head. A few days later, he got fired from the Miami Dolphins, and Lozada filed for divorce.

Jeremy Thomas and Drew Barrymore: 39 days

Barrymore is another star who had her share of brief marriages. When she was 19, she married Thomas, a Los Angeles bar owner, in March 1994. But Drew filed for divorce less than two months later.

In her memoir book, “Wildflower,” she avoided talking about her past relationships because she wanted the book to be a personal letter to her children. “They don’t need to know about my sex life,” she said, and she’s right about that!

Axl Rose and Erin Everly: 26 Days

The legendary Guns N’ Roses lead singer married the woman who was famously known as the inspiration for his famous song, “Sweet Child o’ Mine.” But there was nothing sweet about their marriage. He reportedly proposed at 4 am by saying, “Marry me or I’ll kill myself.” How romantic…

Source: Facebook

And she said yes! They married in Vegas, but just a few weeks later, Axl was the one who filed for divorce. The marriage was annulled, and accusations of domestic violence followed. That’s rock and roll, folks.

Mario Lopez and Ali Landry: 18 days

In April 2004, Lopez tied the knot with Landry even though he’d been with other women just days before. Instead of calling it quits before choosing to go through with the wedding, Lopez waited until Landry found out he was cheating on her. The model filed for annulment just 18 days later.

Photo by Albert L. Ortega/WireImage/Getty Images

Lopez’s statement? “At that point, I was not ready to settle down,” he said in a 2011 interview with Sirius XM’s Howard Stern. “I wasn’t man enough to know how to go about handling it.” Wasn’t man enough sounds about right.

Barry Herridge and Sinead O’Connor: 16 days

Drugs and alcohol tend to lead to poor judgment. And poor judgment is exactly what singer Sinead O’Connor had on December 8, 2011, when she married Barry at a drive-through Las Vegas chapel.

Sinead later admitted that she was looking for drugs on that same night. And that behavior didn’t go over well with her new husband, who happens to be a drug counselor. She and Barry split 16 days after this drive-thru wedding.

Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds: 14 days

Murphy and Edmonds got married on New Year’s Day 2008 in Bora Bora. But the marriage got off to a rocky start on their honeymoon, according to an anonymous source who spoke to People magazine. “Eddie started yelling at Tracey in front of people,” a guest of the wedding reported. “He did it on a few occasions, and it was very embarrassing.

Source: Featureflash Photo Agency / Shutterstock.com

After two weeks, they announced the split and that their marriage was actually a “symbolic union,” and not legally binding in America. “While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship, and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends,” they stated in a joint public statement.

Dennis Hopper and Michelle Phillips: 9 days

Yes, some marriages last less than two weeks. Dennis Hopper and Michelle Phillips were said their vows on October 31, 1970. But their marriage only lasted 9 days, as they got divorced on November 8.

Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

Hopper was married and divorced five times in his life, and reportedly joked later to the New York Daily News that “seven of those days were pretty good. The eighth day was the bad one.”

Gregg Allman and Cher: 9 days

Here’s another 9-day marriage. After her divorce with Sonny was officially over, Cher walked down the aisle with Gregg Allman in Las Vegas. On July 9, 1975, which was just nine days later, Cher filed to have the marriage dissolved.

Source: Twitter

She made a public statement to the press after there were reports of an alcohol binge. “I’ve always believed it best to admit one’s mistakes as quickly as possible,” she said in the statement as an explanation.

Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra: 9 days

9 days seems to be a popular marriage length. Carmen and Dennis’ marriage didn’t officially come to an end until a year passed, but nine days after marrying the model on November 14, 1998, Rodman filed for an annulment. He claimed that he was intoxicated when they said their vows at the alter.

Photo by David Keeler/Online USA, Inc./Getty Images

Our relationship was very passionate. When it was good, it was amazing. And when it was bad, it was the worst,” Electra told Oprah Winfrey in 2014. “It happened so fast,” she said. “It was so spontaneous, and I remember right after, ‘Oh god, what did we do?'”

Nicolas Cage and Erika Koike: 4 days

After a mere four days of marriage, Nicolas Cage filed for an annulment from his fourth wife, Erika Koike. He married Koike on March 23, 2019. On March 27, the annulment was filed, according to court documents filed in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cage and Koike started to date in April 2018. According to People magazine, the couple was seen arguing when they were applying for their marriage license. That’s not a good sign.

Jason Alexander and Britney Spears: 55 hours

The record-breaking nuptials came to an end 55 hours after it became official. After bringing in the New Year in 2004, Spears went to none other than Vegas to tie the knot with Jason, her childhood friend. Hours later, a judge dissolved their “joke” of a marriage.

It was me being silly, being rebellious, and not really taking the responsibility of what I was doing,” Spears said in an interview that aired on E! Well, Britney, we can’t say we’re surprised.

Robin Givens and Svetozar Marinkovic: One Day

Model and actress Robin Givens married her tennis instructor, Svetozar Marinkovic, on August 22, 1997. But seven minutes later, as Svetozar told reporters, they called it quits. There are no photos of this short-lived married couple.

Source: YouTube

Robin Givens has been in movies like ‘Boomerang,’ ‘Blankman,’ and ‘Dream I Never Had.’ She is currently starring in a series called ‘Ambitions.’ She plays the part of Stephanie Carlisle.

Felipe de Alba and Zsa Zsa Gabor: One day

Let’s go back to the 80s when Zsa Zsa Gabor married Count Felipe de Alba in 1983. The union didn’t last more than a day because Zsa Zsa discovered that she was still married to her first husband, Michael O’Hara!

Source: Facebook

I don’t know how a mistake like that can even be made. But nonetheless, Gabor and de Alba split the next day. Gabor passed away a few years ago in 2016 at the age of 99. But she made a name for herself in Hollywood.

Rudolph Valentino & Jean Acker (6 Hours)

This one goes way back. The jury’s out on just how short Rudolph Valentino’s marriage was. After six hours, the bride locked Valentino out of their honeymoon suite! He gave up quickly and headed home. They didn’t finalize the divorce until 1922.

Photo by ullstein bild/ullstein bild/Getty Images

Given that the fact that this divorce was so drawn out, and Zsa Zsa’s marriage probably wasn’t legal, to begin with, the shortest celebrity marriage prize goes to our dear Britney Spears!

And now let’s take a look at the longest marriages in Hollywood!

Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson: 39 Years and Counting

Hollywood heavy hitter Samuel L. Jackson plays the serious and hardened guy in his roles, but the truth is he’s a big softie. He has nothing but love for his wife of 39 years, LaTanya Richardson.

Chevy Chase and Jayni Luke: 38 Years and Counting

Comedy icon Chevy Chase is famous for his performances in the National Lampoon movies as well as ‘Saturday Night Live.’ He’s been married to writer Jayni for 38 years.

Anyway, Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson, who’s a social activist herself, got married in 1982. That means they’ve been together for more than 37 years. Impressive!

Denzel and Pauletta Washington: 37 Years and Counting

It’s kind of hard to find any Hollywood list that doesn’t include Hollywood heavyweight Denzel Washington, who never ceases to amaze viewers. And he also manages to amaze his wife of 37 years.

Denzel once said that his greatest life project was his family. He’s been happily married to his wife Pauletta for a long time, and it doesn’t look like a split is going to happen.

Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman: 37 Years

Most people will recognize this Hollywood duo as the parents from ‘Matilda.’ The two were happily married for 37 years until they famously split in 2017.

“It’s not in his face or in mine. It was a hard transition… but everything smoothed out,” Rhea Perlman explained of their split. “Everybody’s got a good relationship with Danny, and with me and each other. That’s all we care about.”

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn: 36 Years and Counting

This smiley pair has been married for 36 years so far. They met on the set of ‘The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band,’ in 1966. They didn’t start dating, though, until they met again on the set of ‘Swing Shift’ in 1983.

The pair were inseparable ever since. Hawn explained to the Loose Women panelists that, “I would have been long divorced if I’d been married. Marriage is an interesting, psychological thing. If you need to feel bound to something, then it’s important to be married.”

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson: 31 Years and Counting

It comes as no surprise that Hollywood’s good guy Tom Hanks has been happily married for a while. He and Rita Wilson, the actress, and producer, have enjoyed 31 years of matrimony and counting!

These two have been an item since they started dating in 1994. Did you know that they met on the set of ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air?’ They got married a few years later, in 1997.

Will says the secret is: “That we never went into working in our relationship. We only ever worked on ourselves individually, and then presented ourselves to one another better than we were previously.”
