Hollywood may seem like the land of glitz and glamour, but not everything is as it seems. Behind the red carpets and flashing cameras is a world of broken relationships and sneaky partners. While some people say it only takes two to tango, we say it takes three to make some juicy gossip.
The Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie drama is just the tip of the iceberg. From cheating with the nanny to befriending co-stars and dating best friends, here are some of the most surprising celebrity love triangles of all time. Try not to blame us if this list ruins your faith in love and relationships forever!
Actress Debbie Reynolds and her husband Eddie Fisher were Hollywood royalty. Well, that is until he left Reynolds for her best friend, Elizabeth Taylor. Reynolds told People magazine that she and Taylor went to school together while both contracted for MGM. The two actresses were so close that when Taylor married her third husband, Mike Todd, Reynolds was the matron of honor, and Fisher was the best man.
However, everything changed when Todd died in a plane crash. While Reynolds and Fisher supported Taylor as she mourned the death of her husband, it seems as though Fisher provided too much support. He left Reynolds and married Fisher within a year of Todd’s death. The relationship didn’t last, and the couple divorced after only five years of marriage.
It seemed as though Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn were a match made in heaven when they were both cast to star in Woman of the Year. The only problem was that Tracy was already married to Louise Treadwell. Tracy and Treadwell met when they were in their 20s and shared two children, but as the years went by, the couple began having marital problems.
The two could not get a divorce, however, because Tracy was a devout Catholic, and it was against his faith to do so. Instead, Tracy and Treadwell began living separately, which was right around the time he and Hepburn began their relationship. While it was an open secret in Hollywood that Hepburn was with Tracy (up until his death in 1967), she didn’t talk openly about the relationship until her 1991 memoire, Me: Stories of My Life.
It was the perfect meet-cute: Johnny Cash met Vivian Liberto at a roller-skating rink in San Antonio in 1951. The couple dated for three weeks until Cash was deployed to Germany for a three-year tour. The romance didn’t die, and the two shared hundreds of love letters. One month after he came home from overseas, Liberto and Cash married and went on to have four daughters.
However, the happiness was short-lived. Liberto filed for divorce twelve years later because of Cash’s severe drug and alcohol problems, his adulterous lifestyle, and his close relationship with fellow singer June Carter. Two years after Liberto filed for divorce, Cash proposed to Carter during a live performance in London, Ontario. And, well, the rest is history.
Frank Sinatra was infatuated with actress Ava Gardner from the first moment he saw her. Soon, the two began a passionate love affair, even though the singer was still married to his first wife, Nancy Sinatra. While Frank was known to stray, something about his relationship with Gardner was different.
He left his wife in 1951, and only a few days after his divorce was finalized, Frank was ready to marry Gardner. However, a day before the couple tied the knot, Gardner received a letter. It was written by someone who claimed that Frank had been cheating on Gardner for months. The actress was overcome with rage, but she decided to go through with the wedding anyway.
While Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain will always be considered one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most iconic couples, they almost didn’t happen. Back in the ’90s, Love was dating The Smashing Pumpkin frontman, Billy Corgan. However, the two broke up after Corgan refused to pay for Love to fly home after one of his shows.
At the time, The Smashing Pumpkins were playing with Nirvana, so Love ended up staying with Nirvana’s band members. “I had a crush on Kurt, he was gorgeous, I mean he was beautiful and enigmatic and evasive,” Love said in the Cobain documentary, Montage of Heck. Love and Cobain soon began to date and eventually married and had a daughter, Frances Bean.
Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe were shooting their film, Proof of Life in Ecuador when the media found out about their romantic relationship. The problem was that Ryan was married to actor Dennis Quaid. When the news about Ryan and Crowe’s affair broke, Quaid filed for divorce.
While many fans blame Ryan for the divorce, she says that it wasn’t entirely her fault. “Dennis was not faithful to me for a very long time, and that was very painful,” she told InStyle. “I found out more about that after I was divorced… but Russell didn’t break up the marriage.” The affair, however, was short-lived and ended by Christmas 2000.
Shortly after Mia Farrow left her husband and father of her six children, André Previn, she began dating director Woody Allen. The couple soon became the most popular couple of the ‘80s, and although they were never married, Allen and Farrow were together for ten years.
But the romance came crashing down after Farrow found nude pictures of her 21-year-old adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, in Allen’s house. When she confronted Allen about the photographs, he confessed to sleeping with Previn for the first time two weeks prior. A few months later, Allen released a statement professing his love for Previn, whom he went on to marry in 1997. Allen and Previn are still together today.
Actress Anjelica Huston and Jack Nicholson dated on-and-off for nearly 17 years from 1973 until 1990. However, the relationship officially ended when Nicholson revealed model Rebecca Broussard was pregnant with his lovechild. When Huston learned of the news, she drove over to Paramount Pictures to confront Nicholson.
“He was coming out of the bathroom when I attacked him,” the actress wrote in her memoir. “I don’t think I kicked him, but I beat him savagely about the head and shoulders. He was ducking and bending, and I was going at him like a prizefighter, raining a vast array of direct punches.” Today, the former couple remain friends, with Huston telling reporters that she cannot imagine her life without Nicholson.
Prince Charles first met Camilla Shand at a polo match, and it didn’t take long for their friendship to blossom into a full-fledged romance. However, Charles knew that his parents would never approve of his relationship because of her reputation for dating around. When Charles was deployed overseas in 1973, he received news that Camilla was engaged to Andrew Parker Bowles.
Charles went on to marry Princess Diana, but he and Camilla’s relationship never really ended. “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” Diana told Martin Bashir in a bombshell interview in 1995, three years after she and Charles separated. Charles and Camilla married in 2005 at a civil ceremony that was not attended by his mother, Queen Elizabeth.
Ah, young love in the early 2000s. This love triangle began in 2001 when Aaron Carter began dating actress Hilary Duff. The singer appeared on a Lizzie McGuire Christmas episode and became Duff’s on-screen boyfriend. The two teens began dating until he decided to date actress Lindsay Lohan at the same time.
“I was dating [Hilary] for like a year and a half, and then I just got a little bored, so I went, and I started getting to know Lindsay,” Carter told reporters in 2005. The singer dated Lohan for a few months before going back to Duff. The two dated for a few more months but eventually broke it off because of Carter’s inability to remain faithful. This ignited a feud between Duff and Lohan that lasted for years.
Laura Dern and Billy Bob Thorton first met in 1997 after guest-starring on one of the most important episodes in television: Ellen’s Puppy Episode. The two began to date a few months later and even moved in together, but the happiness didn’t last long. “I left our home to work on a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I’ve never heard from him again,” Dern told Talk magazine in 2000.
So, who did Thornton go on to marry? Yep, that’s right. Angelina Jolie. Dern was shocked by the split, comparing it to “sudden death,” especially because she never received any closure. Thornton later apologized, well sort of, for the circumstances, saying, “It made me happy and somebody else happy. I’m sorry it caused pain.”
Billy Crudup and Mary-Louise Parker had been dating for around eight years when they announced that Parker was pregnant with the couple’s first child together. But just when Parker was about to pop, Crudup left Parker to be with his co-star Claire Danes.
The two had been filming Stage Beauty when they fell in love, despite the fact that the actor’s girlfriend was seven months pregnant at the time. Danes and Crudup began a whirlwind romance and were often seen snuggled close to one another all around New York City. But in 2004, the romance came to an end. While neither Danes nor Crudrup publicly discussed the reason for their breakup, the tabloids have speculated that Danes left the actor for her Evening co-star, Hugh Dancy.
Jude Law proposed to Sienna Miller on Christmas in 2004, but less than a year later, the famous couple found themselves in the midst of a tabloid scandal. It came out that Law was having an affair with Daisy Wright, his children’s nanny from his first wife, Sadie Frost.
The actor issued an apology to his fiancée, but the relationship didn’t make it. Miller and Law officially called it quits in November 2006. The former couple was later seen out and about in New York City in 2009 and even attended the 2010 Met Gala together, but the romance fizzled out. In February 2011, Miller and Law announced, for the last time, that they were broken up.
Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman were the ‘90s “It couple.” The two officially tied the knot in 1998 and have two children together. Unfortunately, the couple went their separate ways in 2003 after rumors surfaced that Hawke was having an affair with their children’s nanny, Ryan Shawhughes.
Hawke and Thurman’s divorce was finalized in 2005, and three years later, the actor married his children’s former nanny. In 2018, Hawke told GQ magazine that his life began to fall apart when he divorced Thurman, but not for the reasons you would think. Hawke says that he was forced to take on more commercial movie roles to afford his ex-wife’s alimony.
Ah, the love triangle known around the world. You are most likely familiar with the story, but we’ll still give you a refresher. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were Hollywood’s hottest couple when they began dating in 1998. Two years later, the couple got hitched in a $1 million celebration in Malibu and seemed to be doing great.
Well, that is until the couple announced their divorce in 2005. At the time, Pitt was filming Mr. and Mrs. Smith with Angelina Jolie. Pitt and Jolie began to date, but they were only officially married in 2014. The couple share six children together. They have since legally separated. Aniston, too, is recently divorced, leaving fans worldwide hope that the former couple will get back together.
Marilyn Manson began dating Dita Von Teese in 2001, and they officially tied the knot in 2005. But just a year into their marriage, Von Teese filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The burlesque dancer also said that she disagreed with his partying and his “relationship with another girl.”
The former couple never spoke publicly about infidelity, but shortly after their breakup, Manson began dating Evan Rachel Wood. Their on-again-off-again relationship lasted for a few years, and Manson eventually proposed to Wood during a live performance in Paris in 2010. The engagement didn’t last long, with the couple calling it quits later that year. While she has never mentioned him by name, Wood has since spoken about the emotional and physical abuse she suffered while dating Manson.
Reese Witherspoon met her ex-husband, Ryan Phillippe, at her 21st birthday party in 1997. The pair then went on to star in the 1999 film, Cruel Intentions. By the end of that year, Witherspoon and Phillippe were already hitched and welcomed their first child together, Ava. Seven years later, fans were devastated to hear that the couple had filed for divorce.
Rumors of infidelity began circulating when Phillippe began dating co-star Abbie Cornish shortly after his divorce. It has been rumored that Witherspoon found out about her ex-husband’s affair after finding text messages from the actress. Well, the romance didn’t last long. Cornish and Phillippe’s relationship ended in 2010, and as for Witherspoon, she went on to marry talent agent Jim Toth in 2011.
Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen may be happily married today, but things were nearly over before they had a chance to start. Brady and his ex-girlfriend, Bridget Moynahan, called it quits in 2006, but months later, Moynahan revealed that she was pregnant with Brady’s baby.
The only problem was that he had already begun to date Bündchen. “Going through that traumatic time of being heartbroken and then being pregnant turned my whole life upside down and inside out and just knocked the wind out of me,” Moynahan told Harper’s Bazaar in 2008. Today, the actress likes to keep her personal life out of the spotlight, but she has praised Brady’s co-parenting efforts.
LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian met for the first time while filming the 2009 Lifetime TV movie, Northern Lights. However, as we all know, neither of them was single at the time. Rimes was married to chef Dean Sheremet, while Cibrian was married to former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Brandi Glanville.
Cibrian, however, had a string of extramarital affairs while married to Glanville, including one with Vanderpump Rules star Scheana Shay. “Eddie and I have decided to take some time apart,” Glanville said of the couple’s separation. “I want to do what is best for our children [Mason and Jake]. Eddie and LeAnn deserve each other.” Their divorce was finalized in October 2010, with Rimes and Cibrian announcing their engagement only two months later.
Actress Sandra Bullock first met Jesse James when she arranged for her 10-year-old godson to visit the set of Monster Garage. The two began a whirlwind romance and eventually tied the knot in 2005. But then in 2010, model and entertainer Michelle “Bombshell” McGee came out with a tell-all interview detailing an 11-month affair with James.
McGee claims she first made contact with James in 2009 after asking him for a modeling job. One thing led to another, and James ended up cheating on Bullock, who ended up filing for divorce. James went on to marry and then divorce drag racer and billionaire Alexis DeJoria, while Bullock is content with her “lifetime partner,” Bryan Randall.
According to US Weekly, Cameron Diaz and Kate Hudson were involved in a catfight because of Alex Rodriguez. It started back in 2009 when Hudson was briefly dating the baseball star. A few days after the couple called it quits, another blonde actress was seen leaving Rodriguez’s apartment: Cameron Diaz.
Despite Hudson’s disapproval of the relationship, Diaz and Rodriguez went on to date for a month. Although it has never been confirmed, sources say that this was a calculated move on Diaz’s part. She dated A-Rod to get back at Hudson for hooking up with her ex-boyfriend of four years, Justin Timberlake, just two days after their breakup. Hmmm…
Mel Gibson was married to Robyn Moore for 26 years, but after his drunk driving arrest in 2006, everything began to crumble. The couple officially filed for divorce in April 2009, less than a month after Gibson was photographed hugging Russian pianist Oksana Grigorieva on a beach. Gibson’s divorce was finalized in 2011, and the couple reportedly did not have a prenup.
Moore walked away with over $400 million, setting a record as one of the highest divorce settlements in Hollywood history. Gibson dated Grigorieva until 2010. Later that year, the pianist released a series of verbally abusive voicemails Gibson left on her phone. The actor claims they were edited, and both parties filed restraining orders against one another.
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West go way back. The pair first met in 2003 when Kim was working as Brandy’s assistant, but they never dated. Kardashian went on to date football star Reggie Bush and then to marry basketball star Kris Humphries, all while Kanye sat on the sidelines.
While some people speculate that Kardashian and West’s relationship became romantic well before her highly publicized 72-day marriage, the couple officially started dating in 2012. The lovebirds had their first child together, North, in 2013. Kardashian and West officially tied the knot later the following year, just a few months after her divorce from Humphries was finalized. The couple now have four kids together: North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.
When Eva Longoria married French American basketball player Tony Parker, it seemed like a match made in heaven. After three years of marriage, however, the Desperate Housewives actress filed for divorce. The tabloids later revealed that Parker had been cheating on Longoria with Erin Barry, the wife of his San Antonio Spurs teammate.
While Parker sent Barry flirty text messages, sources to the basketball player say that the relationship never turned physical. “They knew each other, sent each other messages,” the source told People Magazine. “It was flirtatious, but he never did anything with her.” TMZ also reported the incident but claimed that the text messages were a bit more scandalous if you know what I mean.
Just as rumors began circulating that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez had called it quits, there were rumors about Bieber flirting with model Miranda Kerr at the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. There were also reports of the two spending the entire night together partying. While this may sound like two people were just trying to have a bit of fun, Kerr was actually still married to actor Orlando Bloom.
The pair eventually called it quits in 2013, but our story doesn’t end here. The following year, Bloom ran into Bieber while partying in Ibiza, and a fight ensued. The entire fight was recorded, and Bloom can be seen throwing a chair at Bieber. Neither parties ever made an official statement about the incident. Fans can only speculate about what sparked the fight.
Arnold Schwarzenegger wed Maria Shriver in 1986, but the couple caused a media storm when they filed for divorce in 2011. After being together for 25 years and raising four children, Schwarzenegger revealed to the public that he had fathered a baby with the family’s housekeeper, Mildred Baena. According to reports, Shriver confronted Baena over suspicions that the housekeeper was raising Schwarzenegger’s son.
The former governor of California’s mistress broke down and confessed that her son’s father was indeed Schwarzenegger. According to court documents, Baena’s son was born on October 2, 1997, while Shriver welcomed her second son just five days before. That means that Baena and Shriver would have been in contact every day during their pregnancies, seeing as Baena still worked in the household.
At the peak of Twilight fame, actors Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were every teen’s favorite couple. There were rumors of the two dating in 2008 after filming the first installment of the Twilight franchise. Everything seemed to be going great, well, that is until 2012 when the tabloids published photos of Stewart and director Rupert Sanders kissing.
The director, who had been working with Stewart on Snow White and the Huntsmen, was married to model Liberty Ross at the time. After they were caught, Stewart and Sanders issued apologies. Stewart and Pattinson got back together only to break up the following year. As for Sanders, his wife filed for divorce the following year and went on to wed Interscope founder Jimmy Iovine in 2016.
Remember when Taylor Swift told Ellen that her ex Joe Jonas broke up with her in a 25-second phone call? Well, we do. But what we didn’t remember was that not long after their breakup, Jonas was seen hanging around town with Camilla Belle. The two met on the set of Jonas’ Lovebug music video.
Swift revealed to OK! Magazine that Belle was the reason for the breakup in the first place. When she found out that the couple went public, she said, “They’ve been together for months. That’s why we broke up.” In true Swift fashion, the singer used the breakup as inspiration for hit tracks like Forever & Always, Holy Ground, and Better than Revenge.
After starring in Daredevil together in 2004, actors Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck began dating. A year and a half later, the couple officially tied the knot in Turks and Caicos and welcomed three children together. But after ten years together, the marriage was cut short. Rumors of infidelity began circulating, especially since Affleck started dating the children’s 28-year-old nanny, Christine Ouzounian, just one month later.
While many people accuse Affleck of cheating, Garner remains adamant that Ouzounian had nothing to do with the divorce. “We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny,” the actress told Vanity Fair. “She was not a part of the equation.” Well, the romance fizzled out, and Affleck is currently dating actress Ana de Armas.
After ending their rollercoaster of a relationship in October 2014, it seemed that Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber were over once and for all. But when Gomez started dating The Weeknd in January 2017, Bieber wasn’t exactly the couple’s biggest fan. When asked by TMZ if he likes The Weeknd’s music, Bieber replied, “Hell no, I can’t listen to a The Weeknd song.”
Gomez and the Starboy singer seemed like a happy couple, that is until she underwent surgery for lupus, and Bieber came running to her side. Despite initial reports that The Weeknd was okay with the two exes rekindling their friendship, he and Gomez were done a few weeks later. Gomez and Bieber got back together and quickly picked up where they left off.
